Hello folks,
I hope I am not
sending out these e-mails too frequently. There are a lot of new and interesting
things going on, so I thought it was time for a short "hello". In
this newsletter, you'll find useful information and links. I would really appreciate
it if you not only read it, but send it on to your own lists and forward it
to your colleagues. I would greatly appreciate any and all participation in
this project. I have a great deal of ideas, and limited design and programming
expertise. Anyone who is willing to participate can have their private web space,
as well as access to resources we have, for personal use as well as for wiserlabz.
OK, so on with it already...
What is news...
I am excited with many new projects we have going on, but you are many, and I am few, so JOIN and HELP! You can control your own destiny, particularly where Novell and Network Services are concerned. If you want to win the battle in the Internet and network world, join together to support and promote the platform. No contribution can be too small: no comment, thought, wish, concern, or contribution can be left abended . Now is the time to have fun, promote, and protect our platform. While Novell does in fact promote inter-operability, the war does rage on. Microsoft Slams Novell, and Novell kicks off the "Why They Lie" campaign. While it is all cute, why can't we just get along.
First, a potential security issue
with our formmail.pl script, as well as formmail.pl scripts from Matt's
Script Archive. About the time I discovered the problem, Matt's Script was
updated. We updated our script with his changes, and updated the download from
wiserlabz. If you have a Matt's Script Archive or Wiserlabz FormMail
perl script older than 1-2002, or Matt's Version 1.9 Dated 08/20/01, please
update. The problem is that dirty spammers were able to send bulk mail through
it, I found some log
entries that indicated they had used one of clients for that. As a general
rule, you should scan your logs periodically, trace random connections, etc.
This helps keep things on the up and up.
Learn how to configure Apache and
SSL Certificates with multiple virtual hosts with our new tutorial by Lee Garner
(thank you) and modified slightly by
me. The tutorial can be found at NovellSSLTutorial.html
To that end, we've put together
an AWESOME site, actually two sites which show how you can use all the technology
together, in one happy world. While I had also hoped to include Linux in this
newsletter, it took almost a week for our development Linux server to be totally
and completely compromised. Getting a Linux box to work and be secure is NOT
for the faint of heart. It is good, but evidently still pretty complicated.
The site is called link-tool, and is at www.link-tool.com.
This part of the site runs on Microsoft NT4, with Cold Fusion. It uses SQL 2000
for a database. Okay, so where does Novell come in? The actual work, feeding
the beasts (that's you), is done on Novell with the Apache Server and Tomcat
3.3.1. The "http://get.linktool.com" portion is where your "link-tool"
actually gets the data for your site, in real time. This is demonstrated at
http://get.link-tool.com and you can also see how it is customizable at http://www.jspwarrior.com.
What I like about how it works is that you can change the "look" and
"feel" of the tool, through the web interface, at the main site, www.link-tool.com.
When you change your options for each tool, after you login, you see, in real
time, the tool changes on the screen, of the site you modify. Once you put in
your code, a very short line of code, you don't have to edit it. If for some
reason, the site is down, or off-line, which happens, or is simply "not
there", no ugly error messages to deal with. I would encourage you to take
a look at our new "cool-solution".
In the next couple weeks, we will
have Tomcat
4 up on our development server. We've modified and compiled it, and have
it up and running. It will be the force behind www.jspwarrior.com.
In the mean time, if you are an experienced programmer with a development (non-production)
server, you can download
our build, which will run on Netware 5.1 and higher. If you don't need it
don't download it, we pay for our premium bandwidth, which is why our pages
are the fastest loading in the business; well, they also run on Netware,
Apache
and Tomcat.
Are you interested in payment solutions that will run on the Netware Platform? If your like me, you spent a lot of time, and didn't find much. We've written a bunch of payment applications in Cold Fusion, Perl and Java. We have 90% of the software written. If someone at Novell would like to talk to me about what needs to be done, and how we can get there, I would be happy to get things moving. I believe that pressure in the right places can get things done. (I should have been a chiropractor). If you would like to preview REAL payment solutions, don't spend your money, but check out the custom payment solution we wrote for Ithaca Times, a local newspaper. It allows the user to choose their ad options, totals up their choices, and calculates the discount based on the ad size, and processes the payment, real time, using a payment servlet. A confirmation e-mail is send to the Customer and Ithaca Times Staff. As you can see (look at both links), it was designed for minimum impact on the customer, while utilizing superior 2048 bit PKI encryption, with only one confirmation click, Verisign eat your heart out! We have also written an application a client might use to take "Payments" on account. This also begins to use some tools available in the Jakarta Project, like Logging, Parameters, etc. This is designed to allow you to deploy this payment servlet on ANY web site, and we can process the transactions real-time, via secure dial up. We have also written a number of payment perl scripts which can be added to your own shopping cart and payment products. Many of these products will be implemented in EMO Corp. EMO or Electronic Money Order Corporation, threatens to be the biggest competition to the Post Office, Banks, and Western Union in a hundred years. With more security and flexibility than PayPal, we hope to capture a large following. With the latest threats of Anthrax, increased cost, and bad delivery times, it is time for EMO. EMO can produce a cashable check in your mailbox right away. Combined with Bulk Submission Servlets, you can process thousands of checks for a fraction of the cost of traditional payments. Additionally, we have all received 3 checks in our mailbox from the same place. With EMO, all transactions are combined, from all sources, and the client can print just one check, or any portion, payable to anyone they wish or simply send an EMO to someone else. Of course, they can view the detail anytime. Now, before you run off and start your own EMO Company, bear in mind we hold the patent on "The Electronic Transfer of Negotiable Instruments...".
In an anecdotal thought, we recently had to install a better surge suppresser on a Netware 3.12 server, and free up some hard drive space. The server had been up, with no UPS for 374 days, it had to be shut down to install Y2K patches, still going. I have three clients who still refuse to upgrade. Has anyone ever seen a Microsoft server up for over a year, just curious. Of course I believe I quietly sidestepped linux here :). I believe lantasic was the word of the day back then. I don't think Microsoft had any servers then.
Wiserlabz announced the first Lucent/Orinoco wireless connected Novell Server, connected via wireless in our last newsletter. After 24 months of testing, 99% uptime. WELL, in reality, we have most of a City (Ithaca, NY) connected with wireless. It would be great to see some native drivers for these cards on Novell. I guess, Novell will have to pick up this ball, they won't talk to me.
Call for content! As the site evolves, there is a bigger and bigger demand for information, organization, and planning. I have mastered none of these tasks, how about you? Anyone who can help design and present this information, in an organized fashion, contact me about implementing some content driven technologies on wiserlabz. I'm a jack of all trades, and master of few, including my choices of fonts and typos.
Bigger and better, our jsp/servlet/bean Shopping Cart is in final beta, don't put your credit card in, or I'm keeping the money, and you won't get anything but a confirmation e-mail. You will find this on the main page, which is under development. The cart, which is a SERVLET, uses JDBC and the Microsoft JDBC Driver. We are porting a version to offer to the Cool Solution or Developer Group for inclusion in their Demo Software, including source. We still need to finish the back-end, you can peek at the front-end at http://shop.croom.net/servlet/CustomerServlet. The free version will be written with drivers for Foxpro Database to offer the most flexibility to end-users.
Java Server Pages , the Joys of Open Source, and Jakarta-Tomcat Installation tutorials coming soon, stay tuned.
We recently got NSearch working on Apache/Tomcat. We've worked out all the kinks, it actually runs faster and better now than ever. We will have a tutorial and sample configurations up on the site soon. While your waiting, you can search Wiserlabz. Speaking of NSearch, I would like to have the NEW version (hint hint).
The Apache Developer News group has had a lot of traffic and it is a great place to post questions to the developers of apache and mods. A user suggested using the portal services Novell news gadget instead of a message board and news server. Anyone game for configuration of same. This is all great technology, let's simplify it, and make it easy for everyone to install. I need a license that won't expire before I can spend too much time on this.
Still hoping to get the DNS powers that be, to provide a nice DNS/DHCP tutorial online. I am working on one, but I am no expert. I would also like to have the sources for the DNS/DHCP manager, or talk to the programmers who work on this project.
I realize that Santa has come and gone, but maybe Someone from Novell can send me a subscription to SEL Program, this is for dealers, partners. I might also mention, I have detected a problem with the licensing, which might be pertinent. If you happen to work in that department, contact me.
After 30 Days of solid testing with Kaspersky Software Anti Virus Products on NT, we are please to say it is great. Check it out. Tell them we sent you, for an extra sweet deal.
Not necessarily NEW, you should check out Novells, ABEND ANALYSIS SYSTEM now out of beta, and apparently you can get 4 free tries a year.
Our Chat JSP Pages are up and running in the Jakarta-Tomcat section . This is Open Source Software from JavaZoom .net. It is free for noncommercial Sites, Check it out, and check out JavaZoom, so we can perhaps get a license.
I would like to get people to help develop the site content, and to provide feedback. Speaking of feedback, we've written and rewritten the contact servlet we got from Matt at Cool Servlets and Jive Software (CS Servlets at http://www.coolservlets.com) and have fixed a couple of issues, and got the mail date working, We'll offer modified versions as soon as we clear it with Matt. The site is not dedicated to developers, end users, or people who make the software. This is the bridge, that place where we can all work together to find answers and new ideas, and hopefully have fun doing it. Speaking of a small world, while I was shopping for wiserlabz stuff, I had a dialog going on with the same guy at two different places and did not even realize it. Matt is also very involved in Jive Software, I guess either it is a real small world or I am not missing much.
I spent 20 hours or more trying to find any mailing list management servlet/jsp. I couldn't find anything, I finally happened on this site. The software needs a little spiffing up, but we managed to get it running, and will soon have added some features. I am going to talk with the Author first and see if he will update it for us. You can see the "add/remove" features at www.soundprinciple.com. The servlet is nice, you can create multiple mailing lists, and draft and send your letters through the application. Once modifications are done, it will be available. If you would like to help, contact me.
If you like our link-tool idea, I would ask you to either contact me directly, post on the web message board on wiserlabz, or Network World Fusion. You can also contact dconnor@nww.com Deni Conner, Senior Editor, Network World, The Leader in Network Knowledge. Maybe he will do an article on it. Contact me , Deni , or both of us. I think it is very important to get feedback from any perspective, whether you are an end user, customer, employee, dealer or a potential Novell customer. This is a great opportunity for direct communications that could have a profound effect, so we should us it wisely, no pun intended. Please post a message on the message board, at wiserlabz. I would also encourage you to participate in any way you can. You will find the TEXT of this e-mail posted at http://www.wiserlabz.com, just click on this link.
Featured on the Apache.org web site,
aimed at more Novell exposure, we have two Jetspeed Portals up and running.
The wiserlabz portal
has more restricted security, and password supplied upon request. The wisernet
portal is more general in use. The wisernet
portal is linked at http://jakarta.apache.org
under "sample sites" The Wiserlabz portal has been customized with
Novell Cool Solutions feeds and more. We are currently writing a generic LDAP
set of tools to plug in to assorted LDAP
enabled products, which we have tested. These include chat, forum, jetspeed,
and more.
